The Pinedale Trout Unlimited Chapter

Trout Unlimited of the Pinedale area is dedicated to conserving, restoring, and protecting the trout population. Right now there is a huge controversy going on over the water flowing through Pine Creek. Water from Pine Creek comes from the Fremont Lake Dam. To get through the year, trout need at least 30 cubic feet of flowing water per second(cfs). For even healthier living, trout could use 40 cfs. The water that is running through Pine Creek right now is just about 16 cfs. Trout Unlimited is working with Pinedale to fight the battle for more water coming through Fremont Lake Dam. The Game and Fish of Pinedale owns about 945 acrefeet of water to provide the fish with 30 cfs in April. The Pinedale Town Council has deeded about 4,800 acres of water to the State of Wyoming. Although it sounds easy to just let water out of the dam for Pine Creek, the process takes many months to complete. Trout Unlimited of the Pinedale area is doing everything in their power to get the trout as much water flowing through Pine Creek as possible. The battle for water is not over yet, it could be years before the water is granted to Pine Creek, they might not even get the water at all.
Trout Unlimited has many other important contributions to the Pinedale Area. For instance, Trout Unlimited has just completed a stream improvement project to remove an old sewer pipe that was blocking the flow of water in Pine Creek. The job took only two days, but is going to place an impact on the trout of Pine Creek for a long time.
Trout Unlimited was also the first organization to donate money for the CCC ponds. The CCC Ponds were first built near the south end of Fremont Lake in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps. About 7 years ago, a team of government agencies, organizations and individuals combined efforts to transform the old CCC Ponds into a cultural, educational, and recreational area. Cooperative efforts by many organizations made the Ponds a reality. The organizations included: Trout Unlimited, Sublette County Conservation District, Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service, National Resources Conservation Service, RC & D Council, Wyoming Game & Fish Department, Town of Pinedale, Sublette County, Sublette County Recreation Board, and Sublette County School District #1, and Pinedale Middle School. Organizers combined matching grants, workers, and donations to help fund the project.
CCC Ponds Trout Unlimited also helps sponsor the Kids Fishing Day at the CCC ponds. Kids fishing day gives children of all ages a great experience of fishing. Trout Unlimited has sponsored Kids Fishing Day for 11 straight years. Many contributions from Trout Unlimited have made a big difference in our community.
