There aren't many industries that use the water of the Green River in the Pinedale area. Most of the water used in the Upper Green River Basin is used for agriculture. Ranchers irrigate to raise hay and pasture for their cattle and other livestock.

How does a drought effect agriculture?

In Pinedale we have had a drought for the last few years. We depend on the winter snowfall for most of our water supply. When we are short on snow we are short on water. When we are short on water we can't grow hay for our animals. We receive an average of 10 inches of rain each year. We have been at 75% of the snowpack or less the last two years. Irrigation water has been scarce due to the drought of the past few years. Ranchers have not been able to produce the normal amount of hay during these drought years. That makes many ranchers short on feed, prices go up, and many animals get sold due to lack of hay.

Ways that we can conserve

  • Use the least amount of water
  • Spread the water out equally between pastures
  • Use water gauges so that you know how much you are taking
